I heardか、I've heardか（追記あり）

動詞hearを使用して、ある情報なり噂なりを「聞いて知っている」という意味を表わすことは、非常にしばしばある。この場合、現在完了形を使うべきなのか過去形でよいのか気になり、昨年度の「ラジオ英会話」のダイアログを確認したところ、はっきりとした傾向が見て取れた。

1. 現在形

  1. I hear there's a new Big West Coffee somewhere along here. （Lesson 104）

2. 現在完了形

  1. Have you heard of the film director, Doris Williams? （Lesson 14）
  2. I've heard of it, but it's not exactly my cup of tea. （Lesson 41）
  3. Julia, have you heard about Takuma? （Lesson 48）
  4. I have heard that human couples enjoy viewing them at night. （Lesson 162）
  5. I've never heard of him. （Lesson 231）

3. 過去形

  1. I heard that you had a nice vacation in Japan. （Lesson 59）
  2. I heard about that. （Lesson 74）
  3. I heard it's one of the best filmmaking colleges in the world. （Lesson 83）
  4. I heard it's called a "million-dollar view." （Lesson 97）
  5. I heard you've been spending a lot of time with Ms. Terasaki. （Lesson 126）
  6. I heard you bumped into my son Renji on Sunday. （Lesson 134）
  7. I heard that there have been more sightings recently. （Lesson 172）
  8. I heard she's dating the archaeologist, Professor Peacock! （Lesson 206）
  9. I heard some good news about her. （Lesson 206）
  10. I heard Japan is interesting. （Lesson 207）
  11. I heard that you were a member of the shogi club. （Lesson 216）
  12. I heard you serve Vegan ramen here. （Lesson 224）

考察

hear of, hear aboutの場合は、すべて現在完了形で例外はない。例文3-2（I heard about that.）はhear aboutで過去形になっているが、これは「確かに聞いたけど忘れていた」という状況だったから、過去形でなければいけない。

一方、that節が続く場合は過去形である。これもほとんど例外はないが、例文2-4（I have heard that human couples enjoy viewing them at night.）は、that節が続くが現在完了形になっている。

Lesson 48で、リポート文の形になると「知る」のニュアンスが色濃く感じられる、「heard＋that節」は「聞いて知っている」意味だ、との説明があった。

まとめ

まとめると、「聞く」という動作ではなく、聞いた結果「知っている」ところに意味があるので、本来ならば現在完了形を使うのが望ましい。ただしリポート文の場合は、過去形でも十分ニュアンスが伝わるから、敢えて現在完了形にしなくてもよい（してもよい）、ということだろうか。

上記の説明に当て嵌まらない例がふたつある。ひとつは3-9（I heard some good news about her.）で、節ではないのに過去形で済まされている。もうひとつは、現在形が使われている1-1（I hear there's a new Big West Coffee somewhere along here.）である。

辞書（WISDOM）をひくと

  • I hear [that] she's getting married. （彼女は結婚するそうだ）〔I heard ... /I have heard ... ともいう〕

と実も蓋もないことが記述されていた。現在形・現在完了形・過去形に、そこまで気にするほどの違いはないらしい。

追記（2023-05-15）

2023年度のLesson 26のKey Sentenceは "Did you hear about Renji?"　この時大西先生から、「過去形でも現在完了形でもいいですよ」と説明があった。気にするほどの違いはないらしい。
