DIALOGUE
- ジャスティンは娘ジェニファーの好成績に外食に誘うが、はかなくも断わられてしまう……のだが。
- 友達との勉強会に行くのは結構。食事はそのあとにすればいいのでは？ 勉強会は食事会も込み？ ジェニファーの年齢にもよるが、親の知らないところで勝手に外食の計画を立てていいのか。それとも母親は知っていて、ジャスティンだけが知らなかった？

Key sentence
- I already promised my friends I would join their study group.
滑らかに発音できず、なかなか暗唱できず、どうも文の構造がよくわからない、ということでいろいろ調べた結果、promiseという語はちょいとやっかいな性質だということがわかってきた。
伝達動詞
- 伝達動詞にはtell型とsay型がある。両方に属するのはpromiseのみ。
- John said that her story was true.
- John told me that her story was true.
- He promised that he would be punctual. （彼は時間を守ると約束した）
- He promised me that he would be punctual. （彼は時間を守ると私に約束した）
授与動詞
- 「～と、～を約束する」と目的語を二つ取る。その意味では授与動詞である。
- 「～を」はthat節でも不定詞でも取ることができる。
- I promised my friends I would join their study group.
- I promised my friends to join their study group.
- 不定詞の場合、意味上の主語は文の主語と同じになる。これはpromiseのみ（他の授与動詞は間接目的語が意味上の主語になる！）
- She told him to slow down. 〔= She told him that he should slow down.〕
- The doctor advised her to take a few days' rest. 〔= The doctor advised her that she should take a few days' rest.〕
- He promised me to be here at six. 〔= He promised me that he would be here at six.〕
